Brittany Banks Steps Up at Anne & Gilbert

Brittany Banks — Choreographer for Anne & Gilbert. That’s a title the 20-year-old Islander still finds it hard to believe. “I was only 15-years-old when I was cast as Prillie Rogerson in the first production of Anne & Gilbert back in 2005,” says Banks. “I never imagined that six seasons later I would be the choreographer, but I couldn’t be more honored and excited.”

Besides choreographing the 2010 production of the hit musical, Banks also appears on stage as Diana Barry, best friend of Anne Shirley. Banks is unphased by the workload and stress of doing double duty.

“Having been a performer in Anne & Gilbert since the start, I’ve held a variety of roles, including Prillie, Philippa, Diana, Dance Captain, as well as understudying Anne,” says Banks. “I’ve always been excited to take on new challenges in the show.”

Banks says previous directors and choreographers have all left their individual mark on the musical. “I hope to do the same, maintaining traditional styles while capturing the spirit of the Island and memorable dance numbers.”

A passion for dance is evident from her work credits. Banks has choreographed the BHS musical productions of Fame, High School Musical, Grease, and Go Go Beach. She was a featured choreographer for That Dance Show, and choreographed the Victoria Playhouse production of Lord What Fools. For the past two years, Banks has produced “Playing Our Part”, a benefit variety show at the Harbourfront Theatre, featuring the Anne & Gilbert cast. Her credits also include: Provincial Step Dance Champion, Eastern Canadian Tap Champion and Eastern Canadian Senior Dance Champion.

Anne & Gilbert runs June 15 to September 26 — three shows a week — Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (matinée). For tickets contact the Harbourfront Theatre at 1-800-708-6505 or www.harbourfrontheatre.com.

“A marvel .... the joy of the experience makes this one a winner.”
